Semele, a sideways, elegant, leafy shawl in 2 sizes.

Semele is knit sideways from end to end in one piece, including the border and edging. The  beginning is unique - Miss Anne will walk you through all the steps to craft this lace one-piece shawl.

The pattern has both charted and written out instructions- which is a great way to learn how to read charted pattern because you can double check your work as you stitch.

We recommend a solid or tonal sock yarn for this project: Baah New York, beWoolen pigments, or beWoolen sock would all be beautiful choices with many tone on tone colors that are not too variegated. You may also choose to upsize your yarn to sport/DK weight for a larger result; keep in mind you may need more yardage and a larger size needle if you decide to go that route.

Skills needed for class: knit, purl, simple increase & decrease, slip stitch, and yarn over.

Skills you will learn and practice: winding cast on, provisional cast on, knitting from charts, picking up stitches, increases and decreases, two bind off methods, how to block and pin your shawl.

Supplies and Homework:

  • Purchase & print the pattern: Semele by Asa Tricosa available on Ravelry
  • Purchase and wind 400-880 yards of sock yarn (choose either the shawlette or larger shawl). You'll receive 10% off yarn for class.
  • Size 5 or 6, 24”-32” circular needle - depending upon preferred gauge/drape
  • Smooth waste yarn (a little more than a yard)
  • Basic knitting notions: scissors, darning needle, 3 stitch markers, pen, highlighter
  • Optional: stitch stoppers, gauge ruler, small notebook
  • Swatch with recommended needle size (or one size larger) so you can  ensure you like the drape and feel of the the fabric you create.
